Wiki Version:
This component contains the materials and procedures for the **main experiment** and the **stimuli pre-testing** conducted prior to the main experiment. **Stimuli pre-testing** 1. **Original & Amended Statements**: This folder contains .csv files of the original statements from De Keersmaecker et al. (2019) and (Nadarevic & Erdfelder (2014) and details the amendments we made to them. 2. **Materials & Procedures**: This folder contains the code used to randomise the statements to 4 sets for pre-testing, a pdf of those 4 sets, and the study materials used to conduct the pre-testing on Prolific. 3. **Pre-testing Data & Analysis**: This folder contains the data from the Prolific pre-testing, the code used to analyse the data, and the output file which contains the statements with truth ratings closest to the centre of the scale (i.e., 4). These statements will be used as the stimuli in the main experiment. *Note*: Prolific IDs have been removed from the data file. **Main Experiment** Proposed Method & Procedure This component contains supporting material for the main experiment. To avoid redundancy, see the stage 1 for the procedure (the RR will be posted here after Stage 1 approval). A screen recording of phase 1 of the study will be available once the study is complete. The study consists of four phases in which participants rate the truth of a set of statements. The statements were randomised to 8 lists: see "stimulus lists zip" which contains the following: - stimulus_materials.csv : list of statements and their IDs - MAKE_STIMULUS_LISTS.R : R script to create the following files - stimulus_conditions.csv : statement conditions across lists - stimulus_categories.csv : statement categories for the categorization task - presentation_lists.csv : statements+tasks (interest/truth) in random order - qualtrics_files.csv : presentation_lists.csv broken down into separate CSVs In addition, you can download: - The **study description** used to recruit participants on Prolific - The **instructions** for all 4 phases of the study - The **debrief** provided after phase 4 of the study, and the modified debrief used for any participant who self-reported looking up the answers - The extra questions we will ask about the future of this research topic
