Independent and Interdependent Self-Construal Affect Whether Acknowledging Underrepresentation Is Beneficial for Women’s Interest

We experimentally manipulated self-construal and examined how reading a brief article acknowledging underrepresentation affected interest in computer science for 149 White and Asian American college women. Acknowledging underrepresentation increased interest among those primed with an independent self-construal, but decreased interest among those primed with an interdependent self-construal.
