Can a question such as, “Where are you *really* from?” be a harmful threat? Multicultural Americans interpreted such experiences of identity questioning as a threat and made greater discrimination attributions when anti-immigration policies were more salient. These attributions diminished belonging and were associated with greater stress and depressive symptoms.
