Wiki Version:
Event structure and case – Evidence from Differential Object Marking Semra Kizilkaya & Klaus von Heusinger (University of Cologne) In this talk, we explore the relationship between event structure and Differential Object Marking (DOM) in Turkish. DOM is a wide-spread phenomenon in the languages of the world that has been argued to mainly depend on nominal semantic-pragmatic properties of the direct object, such as definiteness, topicality and animacy. We extend the parameters to the event structural property of affectedness, which refers to change in the theme argument. We provide original empirical evidence showing that affectedness shapes the distribution of DOM in Turkish. We model our observations using the first phase syntax of Ramchand (2008) by proposing a relationship between the undergoer position and overt accusative case.
