Wiki Version:
Hi, I would like this SPSP 2021 talk to be uploaded to the 2021 SPSP Annual Convention OSF page. I've attached a .pdf of the entire symposium atttached below. Let me know if you need anything else! ABSTRACT Four talks document how perceptions of advantaged group members, rather than beliefs about disadvantaged groups, stifle diversity within universities and organizations. The first two talks examine how focus on advantaged groups shapes attitudes towards diversity initiatives. Ballinger identifies which aspects of organizations’ diversity policies White participants infer are detrimental to advantaged group interests and subsequently cause backlash (N=691). Brown demonstrates that even when diversity policies explicitly benefit both advantaged and disadvantaged groups, advantaged group members misperceive these diversity policies as harmful to their group (N=2400). The last two talks then demonstrate how a focus on the advantaged group may perpetuate discrimination. Preston finds that White and minority leadership candidates are evaluated differently when their leadership style is compared to that of White predecessors (N=1200). Finally, Phillips shows that discrimination framed as advantaging a group is deemed more acceptable than discrimination framed as disadvantaging a group (N=3197). Each talk highlights possible avenues toward more equal representation.
