Description: Since 2008, DC has experienced an increase in violent crime. In 2019 there were 166 homicides. As of November 2020, we have already outpaced last year by 19%. We know these traumas—whether experienced first-hand or felt in a community—impact mental health. In collaboration with the DC Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE), we will test whether trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can improve mental health and perhaps, secondarily, improve public safety. We expect the results to inform decisions about increasing mental health utilization in the District.
