**Fundamentals of computer graphics and visualization** **Philip Dutré, Adalberto Simeone, and Katrien Verbert**<br/> *Human-Computer Interaction Group, Department of Computer Science, KU Leuven, Belgium* Generating images using computers is a field that started in computer science, but has branched out in many different disciplines and application areas. Since images are meant to be looked at by human observers, the human has always been a factor in developing technology and applications that makes use of computer imagery. This tutorial will focus on some of the principles of computer visualization, and how knowledge of visual perception has been or can be used into developing new types of applications. The tutorial will cover a number of topics to give participants a gentle introduction to this research domain, as seen from the point of view of computer scientists, and will try to identify open areas where models of human perception will be needed for future development. More specifically, we will cover the principles of modern Rendering Software Systems and how images are generated; we will also talk about how user behaviour can be manipulated in Virtual Reality applications by altering the virtual environments in which the user operates; and we will cover some of the principles of Visual Analytics that describe how interactive visual interfaces can help human users to analyze complex problems.
