Wiki Version:
This talk analyzes a non-interrogative use of the English question word *how* in "complementizer-like *how" *embedded clauses. As has been observed, these clauses are factive and occur under responsive predicates. To account for this pattern, we propose analyzing *how* in these clauses as introducing a deficient question set, with factivity added via an answerhood operator. The talk also explores why the word *how*, specifically, might be used in these clauses.
