Description: We tested an influential claim about the relationship between how we produce and how we understand language: When we comprehend a sentence, we use our language production system to predict the upcoming words (Dell & Chang, 2014; Federmeier, 2007; Pickering & Garrod, 2013). In three behavioral experiments we manipulated the engagement of the production system during sentence comprehension and found that the effects of prediction on language processing were greater when the production system was engaged. Thus, our findings show that production does indeed play a mechanistic role in making linguistic predictions. This project has been published as: Lelonkiewicz, J. R., Rabagliati, H., & Pickering, M. J. (accepted). The role of language production in making predictions during comprehension. Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.
