5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is derived from fructose and glucose, and can be oxidized to 2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA). FDCA is a suitable monomer in the production of a biologically-derived replacement for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics.
This work is funded by an NSF Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE) grant as well as the NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC), the Center for BioRenewable Chemicals (CBRC).
