5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is derived from fructose and glucose, and can be oxidized to 2,5-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA). FDCA is a suitable monomer in the production of a biologically-derived replacement for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics.
