Wiki Version:
Hello, I would like to add my talk to OSF. Below is the abstract. Attached is a link to my talk (was too large of a file to attached) as well as a PDF of my slides. Abstract: Efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic are impaired by scientific uncertainty, fear, and negative and defensive attitudes about risk-reducing behaviors. We conducted a social media-based factorial experiment to test whether different theory-based framing strategies could counter these barriers and increase intentions to engage in risk-reducing behaviors. Messages were developed by pairing one of 4 framing strategies—Values-affirmation (VA), Destigmatizing (DS), Uncertainty-normalizing (UN), and Optimism—with 6 risk-reducing behaviors. Behavioral intentions were assessed by measuring users’ engagement with "calls-to-action" (CTA) embedded in each message (e.g., Pledge to wear a mask). CTA engagement was shown to differ by strategy and content. DS and UN strategies had the greatest engagement, each generating 31% of pledges, while VA had the least (10%). Messages about wearing masks accounted for 61% of pledges, whereas "social distancing" generated only 6% of pledges. Importantly, strategy and content interacted; for example, UN messages accounted for the majority of mask pledges (35%). These data are promising evidence for the utility of theory-based public health messages.
