Alternate title: **Where does this come from? Lessons from developing a reproducible workflow for a colleague's project** In my role as a data manager for the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, I frequently collaborate with academic researchers. Late last year, I began working with a colleague who was preparing to publish her Master's thesis, with the goal of organizing and tidying her analysis code and data to create a fully reproducible pipeline that she could reference in a manuscript. In this talk, I reflect on my experience organizing someone else's project and applying reproducibility tools retroactively, rather than setting up a project to use best practice from the beginning. I also reflect on the importance of reproducible workflows to EEB research and discuss some small steps toward a reproducible workflow that make a good starting point for anyone who doesn't feel equipped to learn a lot of new tools right off the bat.
