Overview of measures and proposed additions to the project "Evidence for a freedom trade-off" (original title).
March 28th, 2018
Our project "evidence for a freedom" sought to examine whether social strength of norms--commonly termed "tightness-looseness"--has been changing over the last 200 years, and if it has, how these changes had co-occured with (a) societal indicators of high self-regulation and (b) societal indicators of creativity. Our original manuscript sought to operationalize each category of measures using the following measures:
(a) Societal indicators of self-regulation
1. crime rates
2. debt rates
3. adolescent pregnancy
4. high-school dropout rates
(b) Societal indicators of creativity
1. feature film production
2. trademark applications
3. patent applications
4. unique baby names
However, after an initial round of review, reviewers recommended additional measures to validate the validity of our linguistic tightness-looseness index. Furthermore, reviewers also suggested that these measures be recorded before analysis. This post announces additional variables that we are examining as indicators of tightness-looseness, to establish the validity of our linguistic index. We plan to examine:
1. Religiosity rates per year
2. Supreme court cases per year
3. Laws passed by congress each year
4. Executions per year
5. Profanities in television/film each year
We hypothesize that each of these indicators should be positively predictive of tightness.
