2021 DNA Barcoding for CUREs Workshop ----------- ![enter image description here][1] Welcome to the **2021 DNA Barcoding for CUREs Workshop** organized & presented by educators from [James Madison University (JMU)][2], Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s [DNA Learning Center (DNALC)][3], [New York City College of Technology (City Tech)][4], and [Bowie State University (BSU)][5]. This workshop is supported by [NSF IUSE Grant #1821657][6]. Use the Wiki links in the left pane to find info and activities for each day. **General Workshop Info** **Location**: The workshop will be held online this year. **Workshop requirements**: - You will need your own Wi-Fi enabled personal computer with a camera and/or microphone for teleconferencing - If you wish to DNA barcode your own samples, you will need access to basic molecular lab equipment (Pipettors, tips microcentrifuge, tubes, PCR thermocycler, gel electrophoresis supplies, etc.). We will provide you with DNA barcoding primers and reagents **Downloads:** - Zoom video conferencing software: https://zoom.us/ - Latest version of Firefox: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ or Chrome web browsers: https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/ **Free registrations:** - DNA Subway/CyVerse account: https://dnasubway.cyverse.org/ - Please ensure that you can log onto DNA Subway - Open Science Framework (OSF) account: https://osf.io/ - How to make an OSF account tutorial https://help.osf.io/hc/en-us/articles/360019929673-Create-an-OSF-Account If you have any additional questions, please email Ollie Hyman (hymanoj@jmu.edu) or Bruce Nash (nash@cshl.edu) **Other DNA Barcoding and Blue Line resources:** - JMU DNA Barcoding Curriculum and Resources: https://doi.org/10.24918/cs.2019.10 - Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center DNA barcoding resources: https://dnabarcoding101.org/resources/ - BOLD (Barcode Of Life Data System): http://www.boldsystems.org/ - Ten species in one: DNA barcoding reveals cryptic species in the neotropical skipper butterfly Astraptes fulgerator: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC522015/ - A botanical macroscope: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2722277/ - DNA barcoding Brooklyn (New York): A first assessment of biodiversity in Marine Park by citizen scientists: http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0199015 - MUSCLE (MUltiple Sequence Comparison by Log- Expectation): https://www.ebi.ac.uk/Tools/msa/muscle/ - PHYLIP (the PHYLogeny Inference Package): http://evolution.genetics.washington.edu/phylip/general.html ![enter image description here][7] [1]: https://files.osf.io/v1/resources/wxqge/providers/osfstorage/60de2473f83de20262b0242a?mode=render [2]: https://www.jmu.edu/biology/ [3]: https://www.dnalc.org/ [4]: https://www.citytech.cuny.edu/biological/ [5]: https://www.bowiestate.edu/academics-research/colleges/college-arts-sciences/departments/natural-sciences/ [6]: https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1821657&HistoricalAwards=false [7]: https://mfr.osf.io/export?url=https://osf.io/2r36k/?action=download&direct&mode=render&view_only=867240cbde5d4f8686942ce4ad4b586f&public_file=True&initialWidth=624&childId=mfrIframe&parentTitle=OSF%20%7C%20funding.jpg&parentUrl=https://osf.io/2r36k/?view_only=867240cbde5d4f8686942ce4ad4b586f&format=2400x2400.jpeg
