Recently, researchers claimed they succeeded in predicting stress through facial cues, using eye related features (blinks, …), mouth activity features, head movement amplitude, head velocity and facial skin colour (Giannakakis et al, 2017). Surprisingly, those researchers did not consider facial expression in their model. Yet previous studies have found that participants displayed greater fear, anger, and disgust during stress tasks than during resting periods. More precisely, higher physiological activation, i.e. peak cortisol, was significantly related to more facial expressions of fear and less facial expressions of disgust (Lerner et al, 2007). More recently, Lupis et al (2014) have found that frequency of anger could predict physiological activation following stress but only in men. Aim of the current study is to analyze automatically facial expressions of men (n=16) and women (n=14) in the Trier Social Stress Task (FACET, iMotions©) and to look at associations with physiological activation. Results show distinct patterns of facial expressions in men and women as cortisol levels was increasing. In women, cortisol levels were associated with less Au1 (r=-.53, p<.07) and significantly less Au2 (r=-.61, p<.045) but more Au23 (r=.66, p<.02) and Au24 (r=.60, p<.04), while in men, cortisol levels were associated with more Au4 (r=.52, p<.07) and significantly more Au28 (r=.59, p<.03).
