# Capturing Innovation in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CAPTIVATE) ## Overview The "Capturing Innovation in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (CAPTIVATE)" project aims to explore and document the impact of innovative pedagogies on student learning experiences within a Science and Technology (S&T) university setting. Utilizing a participatory research methodology, this in-depth study aims to create a comprehensive understanding of how students interact with, and are impacted by, emerging teaching methodologies. ## Objectives 1. To understand student perspectives and experiences concerning innovative teaching methods. 2. To offer actionable insights for educators, curriculum designers, and policymakers to better integrate innovative pedagogies in higher education settings. 3. To advance the theoretical understanding of student engagement and learning in the context of innovative pedagogies. ## Methodology ### Participatory Research Approach We believe that the most authentic and meaningful insights can be obtained when the subjects of research are actively involved in the process. Therefore, CAPTIVATE employs a participatory research approach, involving students not just as subjects, but as co-researchers. ### Data Collection Methods 1. **Photovoice**: This technique allows students to capture moments in their learning journey, using photographs to articulate their experiences and perspectives. 2. **Narrative Techniques**: Students will be encouraged to narrate their experiences, in written form, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of their interaction with new pedagogies. 3. **Focus Groups**: Facilitated discussions among student cohorts will provide qualitative data on collective experiences and shared perspectives. ### Longitudinal Examination The project spanned three academic semesters to provide a longitudinal lens on student experiences. This facilitated an understanding of long-term impacts, including how perceptions and engagements might evolve over time. ## Target Population The research is focused on students enrolled in a Science and Technology university. This includes undergraduates, and postgraduates students across various disciplines within the S&T field. ## Expected Outcomes 1. Comprehensive data sets capturing a broad range of student experiences and perspectives. 2. Academic papers and case studies illuminating the impacts and effectiveness of innovative pedagogies. 3. Recommendations and guidelines for educators, administrators, and policymakers for implementing innovative teaching methods in higher education settings. ## Timeline The CAPTIVATE project run for three academic years, with periodic publications and updates to disseminate findings and encourage discourse in the broader educational community.
