Wiki Version:
**Steps for using an OSF repository for a [HardwareX][1] Submission**
1) Create an account on OSF if you do not already have one. 2) Create a Project ([demo][2], [guide][3]). 3) Fill in information fields:
A) Set the project title to the title of the HardwareX manuscript.
B) Insert a 2 or 3 sentence description of the hardware & design files in the "Description" field.
C) Select a license [appropriate for HardwareX][4].
D) In the Wiki section of the project, include the manuscript title, authors, and the manuscript's abstract. 4) Upload all relevant design files, code, research data, and supplemental information to your HardwareX manuscript submission. This can be done directly from your computer ([demo][5]) or imported from other online databases such as GitHub or Google Drive ([guide][6], [old demo][7]). We suggest you use "[Components][8]" to organize your design files - e.g. "Software", "CAD Files", and etc. After you have finished modifying the project and are ready for a submission: 5) **Create a Registration ([demo][9], [guide][10]). This is mandatory! This creates a frozen version of the project that cannot be changed.** 6) Make the project public. Select the "Make Public" on the top of the project page, then "Make All Public" to ensure this applies to all files.
7) Create a DOI ([guide][11]). This is done from your project homepage below contributors by clicking "Create DOI". This can only be done for Public projects, by now your repository should be public. 8) Insert this DOI throughout your HardwareX manuscript as required (e.g. in the “Specification Table”, “Design Files”, and etc.). We recommend doing so as a URL by inserting “https://doi.org/” before your DOI, for example https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/WGK7Q. **Revisions**
If necessary in a revision, the OSF repository can be easily modified ([guide][12], [demo][13]). After modification, repeat steps 5) Registration, 6) Make sure the registration is public, 7) Create DOI if it does not exist, and 8) Incorporate the Project DOI URL in the HardwareX manuscript (verify that it hasn't changed). **Acceptance**
Congratulations! Follow these steps: 1. Verify your project is public (it should be already) 2. Create a final registration (if changes were made) 3. Verify the Project DOI URL links to the final public project registration and is correctly used throughout the HardwareX manuscript (e.g. Specifications Table, Design Files, Bill of Materials, etc.). For a detailed introduction to the OSF watch [this video][14] or consult OSF's [help guide][15]. **Notes:** - OSF's features do not allow HardwareX to support embargoed repositories for anonymous peer review. This is because OSF does not produce DOIs until your repository is fully public. Therefore, your OSF repository must be “Open Access” (that is public) when you submit it to HardwareX. You can create a new version during a manuscript revision, but all versions will remain available online. If pre-publication privacy is required, then use an embargo period with the [Mendeley Data][16] repository or upload your design files in [Editorial Manager][17] directly. - 5 GB is the max OSF storage size. [See the FAQ for more details][18]. Other [HardwareX accepted repositories][19] offer more storage: Mendeley Data 10 GB, Zenodo 50 GB. - HardwareX manuscripts are submitted separately in [Editorial Manager][20].
