# Latin American and Caribbean governments must act now to mitigate the humanitarian and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic ## Introduction This initiative was initiated by [Enrique Acosta](https://www.demogr.mpg.de/de/ueber_uns_6113/mitarbeiter_1899/enrique_acosta_3483), from the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. Nepomuceno](https://www.demogr.mpg.de/en/about_us_6113/staff_directory_1899/marilia_r_nepomuceno_2921/), Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research ## Objective of the project The goal of the project is to produce a document for dissemination and endorsement among research scientist from Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC countries). This document contains: 1. Background information on the situation of COVID-19 2. How LAC countries have different demographic, epidemiological and institutional characteristics, in such a way that the COVID-19 pandemic is predicted to have more drastic impacts when compared to Europe and Asian countries. 3. Point out how governments and international organizations should act to minimize the impact of the pandemic in the region.
