The Effect of Prefacing Wh- Questions with "Do you remember..." on Children's Memory Accuracy

Attorneys often use indirect speech acts such as “Do you remember…” (DYR) questions when examining child witnesses but fail consider if these acts impact the accuracy of children’s answers. In theory, DYR questions may be less suggestive than standard questions because they first ask children whether they remember specific information. The present study examined the accuracy of children’s responses to DYR wh- questions about a cartoon video. Children’s age consistently predicted accurate responses such that older children provided more correct responses to direct and DYR questions.
