Data was collected while conducting the study described in the paper “Layout symmetry facilitates spatial learning in the house cricket, Acheta domesticus, in the absence of visual cues” https://doi.org/10.1101/2019.12.28.886655
The presented data consists of recordings of crickets (*Acheta domesticus*) navigating in circular, equilateral triangular, square and asymmetric quadrilateral arenas of various shapes in multiple experimental variants. The main experimental variant (files included in ./Raw data/center_finding) consisted of implementation of Tennessee Williams setup “dry” equivalent of Morris Water maze - crickets moved through the surface heated to an aversive temperature and had to find an inconspicuous spot of neutral temperature. The spot was located centrally, and all recordings were collected under the red illumination (invisible to crickets), so the crickets had to navigate by tactilely perceived layout shape. Each test consisted of 10 5min trials (see filenames). Files labelled “blind” include recordings of crickets with eyes painted over, which was used as one of the control conditions. Folders ./Raw data/cold_arena_control, and ./Raw data/spontaneous_exploration contain recordings from control conditions assessing spontaneous explorations of either heated (although devoid of the cool spot) or unheated arenas, as the filenames denote.
