Description: In our study, we investigated the role of semi-idiosyncratic self-beliefs in social anxiety. We developed a task that includes negative and positive self-beliefs linked to specific autobiographic situations and a measure of the level of conviction with the belief. Results indicated that high and low socially anxious individuals chose very similar self-beliefs. However, the strength of the beliefs varied significantly between groups and mediated the effect on the affective response following confrontation with negative as well as positive beliefs. This is significant because it supports a more meta-cognitive perspective on social anxiety.
