Description: The increasing incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has led to a global effort of developing various promising therapies. Vitamin E, as an antioxidant, has been proposed to reduce the oxidative stress, reversing probably the development of steatosis and fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Although several studies demonstrated no evidence of benefit, some recently published trials showed an improvement in liver enzymes and NAFLD histology. The objective of this study is to systematically review the literature and to conduct a meta-analysis on the effect of vitamin E supplementation in liver enzymes, histology and metabolic biomarkers in adult patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
