Database migration is a fundamental aspect of digital curation,
particularly for scientific data collections and memory institutions that
rely on databases to store their collections catalogs. However, our
research has shown that practitioners struggle to find guidance in
migrating their data systems. Though there has been some prior research on
best practices for database migration, it is scattered throughout different
bodies of literature and communities of practice. To begin bringing these
disparate best practices together, we are conducting a rigorous literature
review.
In this poster, we present the results of our review of literature in the
LIS and computer science fields regarding the maintenance and migration of
research databases and digital collections. We summarize the existing
literature about this topic and identify the gaps in knowledge. We identify
the channels of publication, primary themes, and topical coverage of the
literature. Our initial searches initially yielded a corpus of over 800
items, which, through an initial title and abstract review, has been
reduced to about 180 items for full-text review. Once the current body of
literature has been further reduced to only the most relevant material, we
will conduct a qualitative analysis of the corpus.
The poster will present preliminary findings from this review process. We
will present data on the channels of publication and topical coverage of
this literature, as well as guidelines and best practices present in the
existing body of knowledge.
