Wiki Version:
**Abstract:** Two strategies of nominal ellipsis have been proposed in the literature: delation and pronominalization (Corver & van Koppen (2011) and references therein). Hiraiwa (2016) argues that Japanese uses the pronominalization strategy. Based on Hiraiwa(2016), this study investigates what kind of modifiers can license pronominal items. Specifically, I argue that the pronominalization strategy is allowed when a pronominal item combines with a local modifier of type ⟨e,t⟩. I show that this condition holds for at least two types of pre-nominal modifiers in Japanese; numeral classifiers and temporal adjectives. ---------- I am looking forward to hearing your questions/comments via the OSF comment section or via email.
