Welcome

This page provides documentation related to the Gender Neutrality in Robots Open Living Review. For full details, please see the paper published in the proceedings of HRI '22:

Seaborn, K. & Pennefather, P. (2022). Gender neutrality in robots: An open living review framework. In Proceedings of the 2022 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI '22), 634–638. https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.5555/3523760.3523845

The Basics

What is "gender neutrality"?

Robots that have humanlike features tend to be gendered by people, whether they are aware of it or not. A wealth of research has suggested that this gendering is often stereotyped in line with societal models of human gender, leading to limited or even negative results that can nevertheless shift over time. "Gender neutrality" refers to the notion that we can design robots that are perceived as genderless by people, or at least do not prompt reactions in line with gender stereotypes. One line of research has considered the design and perception of gender neutrality in robots, including androgynous, genderless, and gender fluid robots, as well as the related concepts of mechanical and robotic genders. Another line of research has attempted to "neutralize" gender/ing in human-robot interaction (HRI) contexts through various means (not always by attempting to design a genderless robot), and evaluated whether this neutralization was achieved.

What is a "living review"?

Living reviews are systematic reviews that are periodically updated with new articles, findings, and possibly reporting structures. Living reviews are especially appropriate for cutting-edge topics where there is uncertainty in the corpus of evidence and a need for direction and congruency. The systematic review process is a rigorous, highly-structured approach to surveying the literature on a specific research topic. In this case, our focus is on gender neutrality in robots.

What is an "open" living review?

By classifying our review as "open," we are marking it as an open science initiative. Our framework, process, and datasets are completely open. We are also open to inviting reviwers and collaborators on board to keep this initiative democratic, non-prescriptive, and alive.

The Framework

The open living review framework is divided into these components:

Data collection

Screening the data

Updating the dataset

Periodic publication of updates

Periodic review of procedural details

Full detalis are provided in the paper. Pertinent details are provided below.

Data collection

Anyone who is an author of an article on gender neutrality can use the following Google Form to submit it for consideration. Please make sure that your article is not already in the dataset.

https://forms.gle/XJxcvWNnHB7YXFHJ7

Screening the data

All articles submitted for consideration in the dataset are available at the Google Sheet below. Please note that these articles have not been screened yet in any way.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/134kYLl769ssGkLSZsyeCExJamYr6087P0Qhd39ysJSo/edit?usp=sharing

Updating the dataset

Reviewers will periodically screen the submissions, add new articles manually, and then update the dataset. If you are interested in becoming a reviewer (with time commitment being negotiable), please apply at the Google Form below:

https://forms.gle/WAMtYRujLubF8S6f9

Periodic publication of updates

A living review must have its results updated periodically, ideally in a peer-reviewed venue. At present, we plan to provide a rapid review or systematic review every 2-3 years. This will be a short or long paper submitted to an appropriate topical venue, such as HRI, HAI, CHI, and so on.

Periodic review of procedural details

Search terms and keywords, databases, queries and query structures, reviewers, data extracted, risk of bias and/or quality assessment tool used, submission form structures, and so on may need to be periodically updated.

The Open Dataset

The open dataset, which comprises four files, is available at the link below. Each file represents a stage in the open living review data screening, assessment, and extraction process, namely:

Screening of abstracts

Screening of full text

Data extraction

Risk of bias / quality assessment

https://osf.io/v6fwg/files

Reviewers

Katie Seaborn, 2021-

Peter Pennefather, 2021-

If you'd like to become a reviewer in some capacity, please apply here: https://forms.gle/WAMtYRujLubF8S6f9

List of Publications

This framework was first developed and published in 2022; see the reference above. The results and methodologies used will be listed here in descending order.

2022

Phase I: Rapid Review

Seaborn, K. & Pennefather, P. (2022).
