We will run 1500 participants.
This study will take 5 minutes or less. Participants will only take the study once (one session). Participants will be compensated by CriticalMix in accordance with their agreement with CriticalMix; these agreements include what CriticalMix does with pro-rating and failing attention checks.
Method
Participants are randomly assigned to one of two conditions. In both conditions, participants are instructed to read a description of an event and to imagine experiencing it. All participants then read that they are in a line waiting for coffee and a cookie to take with them into a seminar. In both conditions, participants read that they observe the person ahead of them take three cookies while the norm is to take only one cookie. In the variety condition, participants read that the person takes one of each of three different cookies (chocolate chip, peanut-butter and oatmeal). In the similar condition participants read that the person takes three peanut butter cookies. Participants then indicate on an 11-point scale, with -5 anchored at “not greedy at all” and +5 at “very greedy” how greedy they judge the person in front of them to be.
At the end of the survey, two open-ended attention checks are administered; how many cookies the person in front of them took, and what event they were attending.
