Wiki Version:
We are running a multi-site replication of the following two studies. Leow, R. P., Hui-Chen Hsieh, & Nina Moreno. (2008). Attention to form and meaning revisited. Language Learning 58.3 (2008): 665-695. Morgan-Short, K., Heil, J., Botero-Moriaty, A., & Ebert, S. (2012). Allocation of attention to second language form and meaning: Revisiting the use of think aloud protocols. Studies in Second Language Acquisition, 34(4), 659-685. We will be running both written and aural versions, as laid out in full in the Procedures and Materials documents. **Rationale for the study and design:** The series of multisite studies will aim to replicate previous results from Leow et al. (2008) and Morgan-Short et al. (2012), in the written and aural modalities. We have kept the same text and comprehension questions from the Leow et al. and Morgan-Short et al. studies. The two main changes in the replication studies are: i) we include an aural version, and ii) for the written version, we present the text on screen word-by-word rather than presenting the whole text on paper. Each version will be run once and replicated at least once. **Data collection done to date:** We have already run full data collection of the aural version of the study, carried out at the University of Illinois at Chicago in Fall 2014 and Spring 2015, coordinated on site by Kara Morgan-Short and Jeanne Heil. We have done a preliminary analysis of this data, which is not yet finalised. **Collaborators:** To date, sites that are participating in the project are: University of Illinois at Chicago (Morgan-Short & Heil), University of York/Leeds (Marsden), another university in the U.S., and another university in the UK. We are searching for another potential site with participants whose first language is typologically different to Spanish. We will also shortly be putting out an open call for other researchers to join the replication effort, via Linguistlist, BAALmail, amongst other forums. **Commitment from collaborators:** Each site commits to strictly adhering to the procedures and using the materials provided in this pre-registration. Each site pledges to aim to collect data from a minimum of 15 learners of Spanish in each of four conditions, making a minimum of 60 participants. Any participating sites also agree to making all data available to all participating sites, and eventually publicly available. Data entry and analysis will be done by the participating sites, using data entry sheets and an analysis protocol provided by Morgan-Short & Marsden. Participating sites may carry out further analyses if they wish. Collaborators will aim to complete all data collection and data entry by end of spring 2016, at which time they would make it available to all participating sites. Marsden & Morgan-Short would be included as named authors on any publications resulting from this replication effort, unless other agreements are explicitly negotiated. **Level of participants:** Sites will work with Marsden & Morgan-Short to identify learners whose L2 Spanish proficiency and background most closely resemble those of the learners in the UIC and York/Leeds sites. See below for information about general proficiency and background of learners in the previous and current studies. **From previous studies:** (Leow et al. 2008) Georgetown University: 2nd semester College level (Morgan-Short et al. 2012) University of Illinois at Chicago: 3rd semester of the Spanish Basic Language Program. **For current replications:** University of Illinois at Chicago: 3rd semester of the Spanish Basic Language Program. University of York/Leeds: York- 1st year Undergraduate Spanish BA; and ‘Languages for All’ (Institution-Wide Language Programme) Levels 2 and 3 Leeds- 1st year Undergraduate Common European Framework of Reference B1 and B2 **Included in this pre-registration are:** 1) Procedures and materials for the listening and reading versions of the study 2) EPrime and Superlab scripts for the reading version, along with a presentation software reference sheet for researchers Contact information: For more information please contact Kara Morgan-Short (karams@uic.edu) or Emma Marsden (emma.marsden@york.ac.uk).
