**Lexical and contextual cue effects in discourse expectations: Experimenting with German 'zwar...aber' and English 'true/sure...but'** Juliane Schwab (Institute of Cognitive Science, Osnabrück University) & Mingya Liu (Department of English and American Studies, Humboldt University of Berlin) ------------ This repository contains the experimental stimuli, data, and code for two self-paced reading and naturalness rating experiments. A detailed description of the study can be found in the accompanying paper here: https://journals.uic.edu/ojs/index.php/dad/article/view/11402 ## Stimuli ## This folder contains the stimulus material that was used in the German (Experiment 1) and the corresponding English (Experiment 2) study. Both studies used the same design and method. The stimuli are uploaded as .csv files. As we used self-paced reading for our study, the individual sentences are split over multiple columns representing the 'chunks' that were presented to participants. ## Data ## This folder contains the data collected in the German and the English experiment. - The raw data files were anonymized, but have otherwise been left untouched. - The preprocessed rating and reading time data have been cleaned of (i) data from participants who were removed because they did not pass the attentional control mechanisms, and (ii) reading time outliers (see the paper for details on the outlier removal process) The preprocessed data can be reproduced from the raw data using our analysis script provided in the 'Code' folder. ## Code ## This folder contains the analysis scripts used to pre-process and subsequently analyze the data. The analysis was performed using linear mixed effects models in R. The analysis scripts use the raw data files from the 'Data' folder, as well as two files in the code folder containing the keys to the correct answers for the comprehension questions. These are used to check whether the responses given by participants line up with the correct answers to each question. ## Plots ## This folder contains plots that visualize the rating and reading time data from the German and English experiments. Some of these also appear in the published paper.
