Wiki Version:
"Making Humans: Human Dignity in 19th Century France" (HuDig19) is a research project funded by the European Union under an IF Marie Curie Agreement. https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101027394 The concept of human dignity refers to the right of every person to be respected and treated ethically. It is a value shared by all EU Member States and treated as a keystone safeguarding equality and justice for all citizens. Untill now, no studies have examined the concept of human dignity in the 19th century. This idea was conceived as an ''emotion" that only a selected few possessed naturally. As such, human dignity was used to justify colonization, inequalities to women, and social injustice. The EU-funded HuDig19 project will explore these surprises, focusing on France in the 19th century. It will explain the attitude toward human dignity as an ‘emotion’ and also research cases where this idea has been resignified around issues related to social justice, women’s rights and anti-racism struggles.
