Description: Abstract Objectives: To build a Google search strategy that identifies Swiss French residential care newspaper articles Methods: I first identified 23 key Swiss newspapers publishing online articles. I then built consecutive Google search strategies searching their websites for both specific (the names of 121 Swiss French children’s homes) and non-specific residential care keywords identified in previous similar projects. Newspaper articles in the first 100 search results were recorded, screened and read in full for residential care data to extract. Study design: Cross-sectional study Results: I screened and read 743 newspaper articles published from 1998 to 2023. A total of 574 articles (77.25% of the sample) were deemed to focus on Swiss residential care. The top 5 newspaper sources of residential care articles were: Arcinfo (108 articles), Le Temps (87 articles), Le Nouvelliste (74 articles), 24 Heures (74 articles) and 20 Minutes (59 articles). Most residential care newspaper articles were published in 2016 (n=72), 2022 (n=56) and 2019 (n=47). Over 75+ residential care institutions and 20+ residential care foundations were mentioned in newspaper articles. The most commonly mentioned institutions included: La Clairière, Aux Léchaires, Pramont, Prêles and institut Marini. Other data collected included residential care researchers, notable care-experienced people, a notable judge, a notable prelate, residential care laws, a federal initiative and state reports on child protection. An overview of newspaper article content topics is also offered. A total of 1413 unique keywords or key strings were extracted. The most common were: foyer, placement, placé, éducateur, éducateurs, éducatif, enfants placés, placements and foyers. The search filter developed is expected to identify 75% of residential care newspaper articles, from all cantons. Strength and limitations: Limitations included a non-exhaustive sample, subjective assessments and data extraction and oversampling of closed institutions. Meanwhile strengths include the large and broad sample analyzed. Funding: No funding was received for this work.
