Description: In Study 4, we found that inducing feelings of being moved led participants to judge statements more ‘profound’. This suggests that the relationship between feelings of being moved and judgments of profundity reflects a causal process in which feelings of being moved influence judgments of profundity. However, this does not exclude the possibility that there also exists a causal process going in the opposite direction, and that judgments of profundity might in turn influence feelings of being moved. To put this hypothesis to test, we decided to manipulate judgments of profundity and observe the impact of this manipulation on feelings of being moved. To manipulate judgments of profundity, we decided to use quotes from famous philosophers and writers and to either inform participants about their author’s identity or not.
