Wiki Version:
Following up on several years’ success in teaching Research Data Management (RDM) skills using the online classroom management system Canvas, the University of Washington decided to convert a closed, affiliate-only class to an open template that can be customized and implemented by other organizations. The original class was designed to present research data management skills to new graduate students who were looking to supplement their formal education; new faculty and researchers are also targeted as a way of introducing them to local resources. Instruction includes content on file and data management, technical organizational skills, best formats and practices for research reproducibility and long-term preservation, as well as wayfinding for local campus resources. This open course and accompanying documentation will provide detail on the original course’s target audience, the class content and structure, and ongoing instruction methods. The transition to an open resource will be discussed, and information is provided on how to adapt and customize the course content. The Canvas Commons link for the class is: https://lor.instructure.com/resources/410b649b56324c449d89112868855622 The class is based on a closed version offered at the University of Washington Libraries.
