Wiki Version:
# Welcome Welcome to the Diversity Journal Club in the [Department of Communication](https://communication.ucdavis.edu/) at UC Davis. This journal club is modeled off of a similar [journal club](https://osf.io/nhxsb/) organized by [David Lydon-Staley](https://davidmlydon.weebly.com/). The UC Davis Department of Communication journal club is co-organized by (listed in alphabetical order by surname): * [Richard Huskey](https://cogcommscience.com/) * [Jeanette Ruiz](http://www.jeanettebruiz.ucdavis.edu/) * [Laramie Taylor](https://laramiedtaylor.wordpress.com/) * [Jingwen Zhang](http://chatrlab.ucdavis.edu/) # Aims There are persistent inequities in academic experiences and careers between individuals from different demographic backgrounds. There are also differences in the extent to which certain groups of people are represented in our scholarship, preventing these groups from experiencing the benefits of our research innovations and, in turn, perpetuating inequity. Despite the pressing need to address historical and current inequities and the need to promote greater representation within our scholarship, often no formal training is offered to achieve these aims. The aim of Diversity Journal Club is to lower the barrier to finding and sharing resources and promoting conversations that help us take initial steps to becoming educated and effective allies to our underrepresented minority colleagues. Readings and discussions help us become aware of the long history of inequity and discrimination against groups marginalized because of their sex, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, intersectional identities, and more, that persists in our communities. Participation in a diversity journal club is one small way to inform ourselves about our biases and the shortcomings of our academic culture and to identify actions we may take to enact positive change. # Reading List We use a Zotero group library or organize our [reading list](https://www.zotero.org/groups/2512646/diversityjournalclub/library). If you are new to Zotero and unsure how to use it, check out this great introduction organized by the [ReproducibiliTea Journal Club](https://reproducibilitea.org/zotero-group). Anyone can browse and/or subscribe to the library. If you want/need admin access, you will need to request access. (NOTE: You do not need Zotero to participate in the journal club, but we use it for organizing and tracking journal club readings). # Agenda The Diversity Journal Club meets monthly (TBD). A discussion leader will facilitate each meeting. The discussion leader will change each meeting in order to foreground diverse perspectives. # Policy of Respect The topics covered in Diversity Journal Club can be sensitive. We are socialized into an unjust and unequal society and none of us are immune to inheriting biases woven into the fabric of society. With this in mind, let’s approach meetings in a way that prioritizes the needs and well-being of scholars from historically and currently marginalized groups. We can do this by listening to our colleagues and by practicing intellectual humility, being humble enough to recognize that we may be wrong and being actively curious about our biases and blindspots, even if the knowledge we uncover makes us uncomfortable. # Online Meetings For remote meetings due to campus shutdown, we will follow the rules outlined by the [ReproducibiliTea Journal Club](https://reproducibilitea.org/online.html).
