Wiki Version:
The HCI community suffers from a problem. It conflates several terms, and thus theoretical groundings, relating to the mental effort involved in interacting with technology. In this position paper, I highlight this conflation, along with describing in more detail where the conflated terms come from theoretically. I hope that the community can move towards being clearer about how it understands and evaluates cognitive activity, with these terms and for related concepts like stress, fatigue, and attention.
