**Instructions - 1st screen** In the following task you can gain or lose points for yourself and the selected charity. The points will be converted to money at the end of the experiment session by the rate 10 points = 1 CZK. --Controls-- Your task is to sort pictures appearing on the screen according to their COLOR. Each picture can be sorted to one color and one shape by pressing 1, 2, or 3 on the numeric keyboard. Which color and shape are currently associated with keys 1, 2, and 3 can be seen in the bottom part of the screen. For example, now you see in the bottom line that the orange color and the triangle shape are associated with the key 1. If a picture appeared on the screen and you pressed the key 1, the picture would be sorted to the orange color and the triangle shape. The pictures can have blue, orange or yellow color and a shape of a circle, triangle or square. ![enter image description here][7] During the task, you will always see which color and shape are currently associated with the keys 1, 2, and 3. Be careful – after each sorted picture, the association of colors and keys will change, therefore you have to watch it carefully. After clicking on Continue you will proceed to the next part of the instructions. *Continue* **Instructions - 2nd screen** --Gaining of points-- The amount of money received by the charity depends on whether you will uphold the sorting rue, that is, sort the pictures according to the COLOR. If you sort a picture to a different color than is the color of the picture, the contribution to the charity will be lowered by 200 points. If you sort a picture to the same color as is the color of the picture, the contribution remains unchanged. (The contribution has the value of 2000 points at the beginning. If you violate the rule often, it is possible to get to the negative values – in that case, the overall contribution to the given charity from all participants will be lowered by the corresponding amount. Your reward is 0 points at the beginning. You earn 3 points for each sorted picture, regardless of whether you sort it according to the rule or not. Only if you do not sort a picture at all (i.e., you do not press any key), you will not receive any points. Some pictures have a number from 40 to 190 written in them. For these pictures, the computer program offers you a reward for breaking the rule and sorting the picture according to SHAPE. If there is a number written in the picture, you will get an extra number of points corresponding to the written number if you ignore the rule about sorting according to COLOR and instead sort the picture according to SHAPE. In that case, the contribution to the charity would be lowered by 200 points. **[XXX]** You could of course ignore the extra points and sort the picture to the corresponding color. After clicking on Continue, you will see how the screen looks like during the task. *Continue* **screenshot A** Below you see how the screen looks during the task with the description of different sections. After you examine the picture, click on Continue. ![enter image description here][4] *(note: this one and two following English-translated screenshots show 100 as the number of all trials - participants were actually showed the correct number, that is 200)* *Continue* **screenshot B** Below you see what happens if you sort according to the SHAPE the yellow square you have seen previously. After you examine the picture, click on Continue. ![enter image description here][5] *Continue* **screenshot C** Below you see what happens if you sort according to the COLOR the yellow square you have seenv previously. After you examine the picture, click on Continue. ![enter image description here][6] *Continue* **Instructions - 3rd screen** After completing all of the remaining tasks in today's study, computer conducts a random draw. If you are drawn, the points you earn in this sorting task for yourself and for the selected charity will be converted to money at the rate of 10 points = 1 CZK and will be paid out. The chance of being drawn is 20%. Your reward will be paid to you after the end of today's study. Money for charities from all drawn participants will be summed up after the end of data collection and transferred to the bank accounts of charities. *Continue* **Instructions - 4th screen** --Gaining of points (recapitulation)-- The size of the contribution to the charity by laboratory PLESS depends on whether you will uphold the rule and sort pictures according to COLOR. The contribution has a size of 2000 points at the beginning. If you sort a picture to a different color than is the color of the picture, the contribution will be lowered by 200 points. If you sort a picture to the same color as is the color of the picture, the contribution remains unchanged. (It is possible to get to the negative values.) Your reward is 0 points at the beginning. You earn 3 points for each sorted picture, regardless of the color and shape to which you sort it. During the task, you can increase your reward, if you sometimes ignore the rule about sorting according to COLOR and sort some pictures according to their SHAPE instead. If you sort a picture with a reward offered by computer program according to SHAPE, you earn for yourself the same number of extra points as is the number written in the picture. If you will want to gain points for yourself in such cases and you sort the picture in violation of the rule, the contribution to the charity will be lowered by 200 points. **[XXX]** You could of course ignore the offered reward and sort the picture to the corresponding color. After you are sure that you understand the instructions, click on Continue and put your index, middle, and ring finger on the keys 1, 2, and 3 on the numeric keyboard. Watch out – after clicking on Continue, the task will begin immediately and you have only several seconds for sorting each picture – until the picture leaves the screen. *(note: Instead of **[XXX]**, participants in 9 experimental conditions were shown the following line: "In this case, however, there is a chance {1% / 5% / 25%} that the rule violation will be detected and you will not receive any extra points for the image, and in addition {you will lose 40 points from your reward / you will lose 400 points from your reward / the task will end and you and the charity will be left with your current number of points.}", always with a random combination of probability and kind of punishment given in {}.* **At the end of the whole set of studies** --Additional questions-- What do you think was the aim of the study with sorting of colored geometrical pictures? If somebody sorted a picture to an incorrect color because they wanted to gain the extra points written inside and thus caused the loss of points for the charity, it would be: despicable (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) unjust (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) dishonest (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) immoral (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) Your own commentary: If somebody did not sort a picture according to the shape but according to the color instead in order to not lose points for the charity and thus did not gain the extra points for themselves, it would be: praiseworthy (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) just (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) honest (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) moral (surely yes / rather yes / rather no / surely no) Your own commentary: [4]: https://osf.io/f6s8t//?action=download&direct&mode=render [5]: https://osf.io/u9cwx//?action=download&direct&mode=render [6]: https://osf.io/rhmgq//?action=download&direct&mode=render [7]: https://osf.io/9wh7f//?action=download&direct&mode=render
