Description: There is mounting evidence that zinc deficiency induces oxidative stress and that zinc plays an important role in glucose regulation and lipid metabolism. There are numerous studies that have examined the associations of zinc status and high FPG and high LDL cholesterol, but few systematic reviews and meta-analyses examining these associations have been conducted. Our study will conduct two separate systematic reviews and meta-analyses in order to estimate the overall associations between zinc deficiency and high fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and zinc deficiency and high LDL cholesterol. In conjunction with the estimated population prevalences of high FPG and high LDL cholesterol in all countries, and pre-existing estimates of the disease burden from high FPG and high LDL cholesterol in all countries, this study will estimate the global non-communicable disease burden attributable to zinc deficiency.
