**Task demos** -------------- The following animations illustrate the attentional-blink task used in the experiments. ****Instruction:**** Within each rapid serial visual presentation stream, try to spot a semi circle and a triangle. The semi circle can have the round side either up or down. The triangle can point either left or right. Try to see both shapes and remember which way they point. At the end, rate if and how well you saw a triangle. Note that there could also be no semi circle or triangle shown at all. Good luck! ![Trial 1][1] ---------- ---------- Trial 2 ![Trial 2][2] ---------- ---------- Trial 3 ![Trial 3][3] ---------- ## Solutions ## - Trial 1: Semi circle (T1) pointing up, triangle (T2) pointing right. The lag between T1 and T2 is three pictures (Lag 3 condition). Did you see that the triangle is blue? - Trial 2: Semi circle pointing up, no triangle (T2 absent condition). - Trial 3: Semi circle pointing up, triangle pointing left; Lag 7 condition. Did you see that the triangle is green? Typically, it should be easy to see the semi circle (T1) in all trials. Due to the attentional blink effect, the triangle (T2) is often missed in the Lag 3 condition (Trial 1). It should be easier to see in the Lag 7 condition (Trial 3). If you can't see any triangles, try to just focus on the triangle and forget about the semi circle. This might help because the attentional blink is thought to be caused by the processing of T1 interfering with the processing of T2.
