# **Surgical Theater & Equipment** ## Operating Theater ![Full surgical table setup](https://osf.io/thxpd/download =75%x) - Custom surgical stand $43 - Custom peristaltic pump and cannula $73 - Three-axis manipulator $1,492 - Neuros syringe and needles $330 - [LED Magnifying Lamp][1] $70 - Anesthesia bucket - Rinse bucket of fresh fish water - - - ## Surgical Apparatus Details ![Surgical rig](https://osf.io/typ4c/download =75%x) 1) Threespine stickleback in padded clamp <br>*(see **Helping Hands Station**, below)* 2) Alternative padded [clamp][2] for larger fish <br>*(optional)* 3) Neuros syringe - Model 75 RN syringe, 5 μL <br>*[Hamilton 65460-02][3a]* $215 - 33G non-beveled RN [needles][3b] 6/$115 <br>*(alternatively, WPI NanoFil Needles)* 4) Three-axis manipulator - Manual Micromanipulator <br>*[WPI M3301-M3-R][4a]* $1,326 a - Magnetic stand <br>*[WPI M10][4b]* $150 a - [Ring stand base][4c] $16 5) Oral cannula and guide tube - Silicone cannula tubing <br>*[VWR 62999-860][5a] ID: 0.058" x OD: 0.077"* 50'/$67 <br>*(alternatively, thicker-walled [silicone tubing][5b] ID: 1.0 mm x OD: 2.0mm)* 5m/$6 - Guide tube - larger diameter, harder-sided tubing <br>*(alternatively, body of a disposable ballpoint pen)* <br> 6) Peristaltic cannula pump, 100 mL/min $64 <br>*(see **Custom Pump**, below)* 7) Pump source reservoir 8) Drip tray <br><br> #### Helping Hands Station Many variations exist on the the classic 'helping hands' of a magnifying glass and two alligator clips on a bar. However, the cheapest, most classic models are not well-suited to this task. **Parts** - [Helping Hands Station with Clamp][7] $28 - Alternative [clamp][8] for larger fish $8 *(optional)* - Self-Adhesive Foam Weatherstripping tape $7 **Key features** - The central **clamp** should be the primary selection criterion - Alligator clips should have an **independent screw** to lock rotation, separate from the closure on the ball joint <br>*(visible above near* **⑤** *protruding rightward from the clip holding the cannula)* **Modifications** - **Removed** lighted magnifying glass and upper arm<br>*(magnification and lighting are insufficient on these stands)* - **Removed** coiled soldering iron guard - **Moved** included clamp forward and glued it permanently into position <br>*(needed space for secondary clamp)* - **Added** secondary clamp for larger fish<br> - **Removed** electric components from battery compartment<br>*(needed space for bolts securing secondary clamp)* - **Padded** both clamps<br> Leaving the included clamp's curved/hollowed jaw unpadded (as pictured below) provided superior 'breathing room' for the body and also allowed the head to be more tightly secured. ![Clamp detail](https://osf.io/yw84v/download =50%x) <br><br> #### Custom Pump The surgical procedure took several minutes even when well-practiced. Initial piloting revealed the need for a continual supply of oxygen and anesthesia. Because of the small size of threespined stickleback, the pump needed to offer finely adjustable flow rate and low head pressure. No preassembled, standalone products offered satisfactory specifications, but the parts to build a custom pump were readily available and inexpensive. **Parts** - Peristaltic liquid [dosing pump][6a] 0-100 mL, 80 mA $13 - Speed adjustable reversible [speed controller][6b] $8 - 12V 500mA UL-listed [power adapter][6g] $7 b - Waterproof [project box][6d] 110x80x70 mm $11 - Barb-to-barb 1/16" [couplings][6c] 10/$17 - [Strain relief][6e] boots 3 mm ID 10/$3 - PG7 or M12 [cable glands][6f] 6/$5 - Miniature [zip ties][6h] (2.0-2.5 mm wide) 100/$3 ![Exploded overview](https://osf.io/s9u2y/download =75%x) **Construction** See the [detailed assembly instructions][pump] and photos on the dedicated build page. ------- #### Footnotes a) Loaned by Gene Robinson's lab <br>b) An appropriate adapter was recycled from an obsolete device [1]: https://amazon.com/dp/B010TOTT58 [2]: https://amazon.com/dp/B01LQ8WKNE [3a]: https://www.hamiltoncompany.com/laboratory-products/syringes/65460-02 [3b]: https://www.hamiltoncompany.com/laboratory-products/needles/65461-01 [4a]: https://www.wpiinc.com/var-3093-manual-micromanipulator [4b]: https://www.wpiinc.com/m10-m10-magnetic-stand [4c]: https://amazon.com/dp/B00657P0MA [5a]: https://us.vwr.com/store/product/4639982/helixmark-silicone-tubing-silastic-material-helix-medical [5b]: https://amazon.com/dp/B01N75T1P0 [6a]: https://amazon.com/dp/B01HRPKB0O [6b]: https://amazon.com/dp/B071H2YQG5 [6c]: https://amazon.com/dp/B000R8GPRW [6d]: https://amazon.com/dp/B06ZXSGT8H [6e]: https://amazon.com/dp/B01IQXFCP0 [6f]: https://amazon.com/dp/B07W48PMWZ [6g]: https://amazon.com/dp/B073SK2RHC [6h]: https://amazon.com/dp/B07WK2LD45 [7]: https://amazon.com/dp/B01882K0OC [8]: https://amazon.com/dp/B01LQ8WKNE [pump]: https://osf.io/sgpvm/wiki/Peristaltic%20cannula%20pump%20building%20instructions/
