Native Americans and other indigenous peoples have been subdued into the
minority of minorities. There is an alarmingly small representation of this
group in the astronomy community; so much so, that it fails to reflect the
corresponding fraction in the general population and breaks the anonymity
of these individuals.
This talk will outline many unique characteristics that set indigenous
cultures apart from other underrepresented minorities. Extending the same
treatment to indigenous peoples as other underrepresented minority groups
may affect their retention rate in STEM fields. I offer my own perspective
and experiences as an indigenous student on what has been beneficial for me
and other indigenous students, and offer suggestions on individual and
collective, community-wide actions that can make the field of astronomy
more accommodating to indigenous peoples.
