## Information about the Tutorial ## The full tutorial Research Skills for Engineering Students resides in a LibGuide found here: http://guides.library.ubc.ca/ResearchSkillsForEngineeringStudents The tutorial is currently under revision to move the content from a wiki space into a permanent LibGuide space. This wiki contains the current revision instructions and necessary materials for student librarians to complete work on the tutorial. ### March 2019 - December 2019: Moving from Wiki Space into LibGuides ### All of the files, links and videos for the tutorial live in this project space. 1. Background * Challenges * edx Edge * Solutions and Next Steps ### Instructions ### A template of the tutorial has been created in LibGuides by Suzan Zagar. Module 2 provides the necessary coding to use in LibGuides in order to create the accordion boxes used to hold the text files. See the original LibGuide tutorial for how it should look once moved to LibGuides. http://guides.library.ubc.ca/ResearchSkillsForEngineeringStudents Each component in this project holds any files that might be needed to reproduce the tutorial in the templated tutorial in LibGuides. Each Module should have a box that contains: - the video - the transcript - additional related information that expands on knowledge in the tutorials. The transcript and additional text and links should all be in accordion boxes. To create accordion boxes look in the Email component of this project for Yvonne's instructions. Also, Suzan's example in Module 2 provides an example of accordion boxes; however, she did not include the transcript as an accordion box. #### Transcripts #### Transcripts should be added as they have been in the edX Edge example (i.e. as PDFs that users can download). This makes the transcript more accessible for users who may need to create a side-by-side narration and transcript for the video. It also ensures that text can be enlarged by the user to suit their needs. #### Accordion boxes #### Each accordion box in the original LibGuide/wiki tutorial should be mimicked in the revised and new LibGuide template space. Maintain the same headings and text content. *Note: Some links may need updating. Student librarian documented work on the project also resides here to help assist with a smooth transition from one student to the next. ## Background ## The Research Skills for Engineering Students tutorial was originally created in 2015 by Amber Saundry in collaboration with Applied Science instructor Annette Berndt. The tutorial contains a mixture of content pages and video tutorials. Content was built in UBC Wiki http://wiki.ubc.ca/Library:Research_Skills_For_Engineering_Students This provided the ability to create and edit content in one platform. ### Challenges ### - Maintaining content in the wiki - edX Edge platform #### Wiki content #### Maintaining content in the wiki requires knowledge of working in the wiki and having access to the wiki content. Student Librarians have been providing support in maintaining the tutorials, but larger edits require involvement from either the current engineering librarian overseeing the tutorials (Sarah Parker) or web support library assistant Suzan Zagar. This model is challenging to sustain and it was with this in mind that it was decided to move the tutorials into the edX platform. #### edX Edge #### Moving the tutorial into edX Edge was relatively easy and it afforded the opportunity to create quiz components that are built in to the Edge platform. One of the challenges with Edge is that students are required to create a login and this has proven to be a barrier for participation in Edge. ### Solutions and Next Steps ### - LibGuides is the preferred platform to house all of the tutorial content. - move all content into one LibGuide (templated created - October 2018). In January and September 2019 this work continued led by Chantal Lyons-Stevenson. - Delete old tutorial and add Sarah as owner of the revised tutorial - Create problem sets to be added to LibGuide based on edX Edge content - Consider deleting edX Edge tutorial - Review exisiting tutorials for future revisions and add Camtasia content to this project. - consider an instructor's guide - add past quizzes to this project space
