Description: This mapping exercise was undertaken to find art provision for infants aged 0-3 and their caregivers in the UK in 2023, as part of an AHRC funded project "Art At The Start: A Research Consortium Exploring Art-based Intervention For Early Years Relationships" We sought to map out art opportunities for infants within the UK in 2023. We wanted to learn more about what was available to families, the spread of availability, the different kinds of activity or services on offer, and to identify useful case examples. Search parameters: The art activities/services had to target infants within the first 1001 days (0-3 years) and involve a supported activity for infants together with a caregiver – for example, not including things happening within a day care setting without parents or for them to do themselves at home. We also narrowed down to visual art, which we defined as exploring materials, having the opportunity to create and mark making. The activities/services had to be ‘live’ at some point in 2023. Beyond that we were very open - the visual art could take place in any setting, such as galleries, community centres or other public spaces, and the activities could be on broad spectrum from public art making, to participative arts, to art therapy. We were open to any aims from the provision of the art activity – not just services focused explicitly on supporting perinatal and infant mental health. Inclusion Population: -For Infant in the first 1001 days (0-3 years) -Must be together with a caregiver -Within the UK Service: -Visual Art-based – defined as exploring materials, opportunity to create, mark making -Organised/supported activities -Can be participative art, artist led, therapeutic etc Aims: -Open to any aims Exclusion -Not with a caregiver, e.g. happening within early care/education settings -Not suggestions for activities to try themselves or at home -No exclusion based on who delivers -No exclusion based on setting -Not included if service not ‘live’ at some point in 2023 We used internet searching to try to locate services available throughout the UK, searching for “art AND (sessions OR classes OR groups) AND (early years OR 0-3 OR baby OR toddler)”, and trawling gallery websites. We also reached out through established professional networks, such as Engage, British Association of Art Therapists, and Family Arts Trust, and social media to ask for information and to provide a link to an online survey where organisations could tell us directly about what they offered. Where we were lacking information on an identified service from the web, word of mouth and/or survey, we followed up by email. For each example identified we recorded activity description, setting, population, how it was accessed, who delivered the service, costs/funding, and aims.
