We conducted large-scale (n = 736) online replication of Study 1 of Schnall, Benton, and Harvey (2008). We did not replicate the key finding that cleanliness led participants to be less severe in their moral judgments t(734) = -0.65, p = .518, d = -0.05, 95% CI [-0.19, 0.10]. We also included several potential moderators of the effect: conservatism, private body consciousness, disgust sensitivity, honesty/humility, and gender. While several of the potential moderators were significantly related to the severity of participants moral judgments, no variable significantly moderated the effect of cleanliness on the severity of moral judgment.
