Description: This project examines how group size affects cooperation when temptation (extra benefits from noncooperation over cooperation) or gain (extra benefits from full cooperation over full noncooperation) increases with group size. We also test competing hypotheses that reputation-based partner choice, as well as punishment, is more effective or less effective in promoting cooperation in larger (versus smaller) groups. Participants played online one-shot public goods games across two studies in which we manipulated group size, along with the payoff structure (Study 1, N = 820), and also manipulated whether there is reputation-based partner choice or punishment, compared to an anonymous situation (Study 2, N = 1132).
