Wiki Version:
Implementation of the official protocol --------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- **Experimenters** Testing will be conducted by two psychology undergraduate students, both trained on collecting experimental data. One experimenter conducted the pretest on 6 participants and collected data on several other experiments and the other received extensive instructions on how to run the protocol and the e-prime software. Both experimenters have good theoretical knowledge on various subjects in social and experimental psychology, but don’t have a specific expertise on the specific subject of ego-depletion. **Piloting / training** We conducted a pilot study prior to collecting the data. Piloting was conducted on 6 undergraduate students, recruited as part of an experiment on transcription ability and personality and was done by one of the undergraduate student who will be collecting the final dataset. We used the French translation (with back-translated instructions and a French set of words) of the letter E task and the MSIT with French instructions (back translated). We also created an E-Prime version of the questionnaire and two scripts launching (1) practice and hard version of the letter E task, the questionnaire and the MSIT or (2) practice and easy version of the letter E task, the questionnaire and the MSIT. As a result of the piloting study, we found that participants had trouble understanding the instructions for the MSIT, mainly because the term "Identity" was difficult to translate. To make it clearer, we added this part : "...indiquant l’identité (les chiffres "1", "2" ou "3")", which would translate to "...indicating the identity (the figures "1", "2" or "3"). Participants found the instructions clearer with this change, so we decided to add it to the final protocol. However, we found that participants made a lot of errors during the MIST, so that 2 of them had to be removed from the analysis, based on the R packages for data analysis. **Experimenter knowledge of expected outcomes** Both experimenters have basic knowledge about the ego depletion phenomenon. However, to ensure experimenters will be blind to the condition, they will launch one of the two aforementioned scripts, without any knowledge of which condition (hard/easy) correspond to each script. Each script will be named in a way that the experimenter won’t be able to deduce which condition the participant will be in. **Recruiting** Participant will be recruited among a population of undergraduate students in social science and humanities. Participants will be recruited either via the mailing list and register online or directly via a paper timetable. The study will be described as a 30-minute study on “reconnaissance de mots et nombres et temps de reaction” (French for “word and number recognition and reaction time”) and will be rewarded with 10 euros or course credit. **Sample, subjects, and randomization** Recruitment of participants will be open until we have tested the required amount of participants (i.e., 50 in each condition). Demographics will be assessed at the end of the protocol for all participants, including whether they have French as their first language. Participants will be recruited in different fields to have a balanced gender ratio (i.e. between 30% and 70% female) and participants above 30 years old will not be included in the analysis. We will check demographic variable a first time after half the sample has been recruited and at the end of data collection (i.e., when we have a complete sample of 100 participants). If too much participants need to be excluded from the analysis, we will run additional sessions until the complete sample is reached. All participants will be randomly assigned to each condition by generating a random sequence containing 50 participants of each condition. If we need to run additional sessions due to too much excluded participants, a new random sequence containing X of each condition will be generated (where X is the number of additional participants needed). **Setting/Lab/Equipment** Our lab is equipped with the latest E-Prime version (E-Prime 2.0 Professional), desktop computers and 23 inch screens. We have 3 separate and isolated experimental rooms, each between 3 and 4 m², containing one table and one chair. Each participants will be seated at an equal distance from the screen and won’t be able to ear sounds from outside the room. Since only 2 experimenters will be present, no more than 2 participants will be tested at the same time.
