Transgressors’ Willingness to Apologize: The Effects of Social Power and Perspective Taking

One effective way to reconcile relationships is to offer an apology. However, apologies pose risks that transgressors try to avoid. Using power approach theory, we tested the effect of social power on willingness to apologize. Results suggest high power transgressors apologize less than low power transgressors (Studies 1-3); however, taking the victims perspective reversed this effect (Study 4).
