Prosodic cues in on-line semantic processing - ERP evidence on quantifier restriction

The present ERP study used picture-sentence-verification to examine the role of prosodic contours on the processing of quantifier restriction. Sentences were either false or true, or they involved a possible semantic revision depending on whether an upcoming extraposed relative clause further restricted the quantificational domain. Prosody either indicated the upcoming restriction (continuation rise) or the sentence end (falling contour). Analogous to reading studies, the N400 was reduced for true vs. false conditions, with the amplitude of the revision conditions in between. The prosodic manipulation did not interact with semantic processing, suggesting a restricted role of prosody in the current constructions.
