Decolonisation and diversification are broadly about confronting how European imperialism, colonialism and oppression have shaped our modern world. In the biomedical sciences, it is critical that students consider the wider context in which knowledge has been built, to support them to identify and address long-held biases in biomedical research and healthcare. We sought to capture the attitudes and understanding of decolonising and diversifying of the curriculum. Surveys were sent to all undergraduate students and teaching staff within the three Biomedical Sciences Schools at the University of Bristol. We received 121 responses from students and 71 from students. Focus groups with staff and students were undertaken to gain a deeper understanding of attitudes towards colonial influences in our curricula to further. The aim of this project is to recognise the issues that affect the science we teach and how these have a wider impact on the experience of the student undertaking our courses. Our purpose is for this project to result in visible changes to our teaching and we hope this will also promote constructive discussion and positive change more widely within our academic and student community.
