Description: Emotional granularity describes an individual’s ability to create instances of emotion that are diverse and context-specific. Considerable evidence suggests that higher emotional granularity is a protective factor for mental and physical well-being. Emotional granularity is typically measured by asking participants to repeatedly rate the intensity of their emotional experience on a variety of pre-populated terms; these ratings are then analyzed using within-person correlational approaches. This approach generates static snapshots of word co-endorsement that capture neither intra-individual fluctuations in emotional granularity over time, nor different aspects of granularity such as relationships between pairs or groups of emotions. To address these needs, we adopt a network analytic approach, which produces multidimensional, time-varying measures of emotional granularity.
