Description: Collected from the CCL corpus (http://ccl.pku.edu.cn:8080/ccl_corpus/index.jsp?dir=gudai), this dataset displays the diachronic evolution of Chinese Change of State (COS) verbs: pò (break) and kāi (open). With the dataset, we firstly identify the argument structure constructions of COS (change of state) verbs. Secondly, we demonstrate attraction and differentiation among these argument structure constructions based on annotated data involving subjects, objects, and predicates. The findings highlight ten argument structures constructions forming four pairs of causative alternation, namely NP1+COS+NP2 and NP2+COS, NP1+V+COS+NP2 and NP2+COS, NP1+V+COS+NP2 and NP2+V+COS, NP1+COS+V+NP2 and NP2+COS+V. These functionally similar causative or inchoative constructions coevolve as a constructional family, with attraction or differentiation as the outcome. We further argue that attraction and differentiation constitute two ends of the same local-schematic-systemic continuum. Attracted to the analogical model at the local level, causative and inchoative members become more alike. Attracted to the constructional network at the global level, causative and inchoative variants maintain differences from each other.
